Ball Clay
Ball clay is a rare natural phenomenon of various geological factors coming together to form the clay. It is so rare that it is found in only a handful of locations around the world. The right geological elements must also be present for the ball clay to be preserved where it was formed. West Malaysia is very fortunate to have these factors present in the Kinta Valley where we obtain our supply of ball clay.
Ball clay is a kaolinitic clay which commonly consists of 20–80% kaolinite, 10–25% mica, 6–65% quartz as well as organic matter. Prized for its plasticity, unfired strength and light colour on firing, it is used principally for manufacturing white ceramics and sanitaryware. Ball clay is also used in refractories, polymers, adhesives and sealants as well as in horticulture as soil amendments.
